Paula brings humor, creativity, backbone and heart to her work.
“I have always been attracted to fabric. I learned the “feel” of fabric from visiting fabric stores with my mother. Mother felt each piece of fabric by running it gently between her thumb and first finger. My first big quilting project was hand quilting a bed size top my grandmother had appliqued. Using a quilting frame my husband built, the hours spent quilting allowed me to connect to my grandmother who had been dead for decades. As I quilted, I thought of the women who had come before me whose only creative outlet was their handwork.
I am also attracted to the process of creation. I pull fabrics together and start whittling. I rarely have a product in mind; I let the fabric and my eye inform me of what comes next. I am also attracted to the frenzy/ precision dynamic in creation. I love being lost in time while I create. That being said, I am also attracted to the skills I learn as I create. I end most sessions in my studio by asking myself what I am learning and what I am noticing.
